My column on how web video producers are being exploited by broadcast media

by Casey McKinnon on August 7th, 2007

My first Guardian Unlimited column just went live. It’s called “Give us credit” and it’s about the contracts that we receive from broadcast media to license our content for television. I wrote about this because I haven’t seen anyone writing about it before and because I feel it’s important to anyone publishing their own videos on the internet.

Now that the excitement over reality TV is dying down, a new budget-saving television revolution is upon us: internet video reruns. Later this year, many stations across America will be launching shows featuring some of the most popular web videos you’ve already seen. They’ll also be screwing the producers of those videos – people like me – out of royalties, recognition and more.

My Internet TV Bubble

I just got home from a party with my former co-workers and, just like the day I left, I still find myself explaining how the internet will revolutionize the distribution of television. Although Rudy and I have turned 8Bit Brownies Inc. into a real business, people still ask me how my “little” movies are doing. Zod help me…

Guess this is what happens when you live vicariously through the internets!

Over the past week, Rudy and I have been getting e-mails and phone calls asking about Autumn Kelly. Autumn graduated from high school and university with me and due to the recent announcement of her engagement to Peter Phillips, British media is contacting every possible lead to get photos and information on her.

Here is the information I’m willing to disclose:

  • She has always had those movie star good looks;
  • She is incredibly intelligent;
  • She has a great sense of humour.

I’m very happy that Autumn has found someone who she can share her life’s dreams with… whether he is a prince or not.

It is my belief that, if Autumn is interested in disclosing any information to the media, she will do it herself. Please do not try to contact us on this matter, we will not comment further.
